How to Prevent Allergy Symptoms

We All Have Them
Whether you are allergic to absolutely everything, or just pollen during spring time, there are things you can do to dramatically decrease the allergens within your environment.
Below are some tips to help you progress toward living a healthier non allergy-driven lifestyle.
Take an Antihistamine
This is the obvious first choice, antihistamine's help reduce your allergy flare-ups; this is helpful for those who have seasonal allergies - but may not be as effective for long-term use to those who are more sensitive and suffer allergy symptoms for a larger portion of the year.
Note: Some antihistamines may make you drowsy - like Benadryl, but there are also products like Claritin or Reactine that do a fantastic job without making you tired.
Environmental Factors
Since environmental factors contribute the most to our allergies, it is important that you take a look at what you do everyday to see where you may encounter a problem that exacerbates your allergies.
Here are some tips on how to minimize the allergens in your life:
1. Pets
If you are allergic to animals, it is important that you take an antihistamine before entering an environment with them.
If you are looking for an apartment, and you are not sure if past tenants have had pets, your best bet is hardwood floors; these do not trap in allergens and dander like carpets do.
If you already live in a place with carpets, make sure you shampoo your carpets and not just vacuum them - as vacuuming is not very effective at removing allergens from carpet.
2. Dust Mites
Dust mites are everyones problem, to get rid of them - be sure to wash sheets and clothes regularly, as well as vacuum often.
3. Forced-Air or Hot-Water Heating
For those who are quite sensitive and prone to allergies, hot-water heating is ideal because there is no movement of potentially contaminated air.
If your heating system uses forced-air, make sure the filters are replaced at least once every three months.
Live Healthier
These are just some of the many ways you can reduce allergens within your environment, but at least you'll be able to breath and live healthier :)
